We install our period shutters in all types of different homes – from country cottages to apartments, new builds and period homes. The amazing thing about plantation shutters is that they really do suit most properties.
Period properties quite often have some sort of restrictions in terms of what can be fitted and we often work with home owners so that they can get their window coverings approved – if this is need at all.
In this period home, which was extended at the back, we actually used a variety of window coverings, which we discussed in conjunction with the home owner at the time the renovation project was taking place.
For the bay window there really was only one solution that made the most of the bay but also provided privacy for this property which was located on the high street. Yes, a set of plantation shutters. These were made in wood, of course, as why would you spoil a lovely set of wooden windows by covering them with an mdf or vinyl shutter. We used a very simply design – just 4 panels
with a midrail – and this allowed for the top and bottom set of louvers to be controlled separately. We also went for a larger slat size – a 76mm rather than a 64mm as these provide a more contemporary look which fitted in with the renovation project in the rest of the home and also maximised light.
This room was integrated with the kitchen and a seating area. Here, we used our wooden venetian blinds. So, as you can see we don’t always advocate a shutter. These venetian blinds though are our shutter look venetians and are manufactured to replicate a shutter. As the slats are thinner than a shutter’s louvres they can be appropriate for certain windows. They are called shutter look venetians because unlike normal venetians they do not have a hole in the centre of the slats. Have you ever wondered why you see tapes on venetians well they are there to prevent light bleed through the slat and also to provide privacy.
If you want tapes then of course these can be added to the venetian blinds for decorative purposes. In this case the extra detail can add a finishing touch and in this case we added tapes to these bathroom venetians.
