All of our shutter ranges are named after key towns in Hampshire and the Winchester Shutter Range is no exception. This beautiful range is named after Winchester, Hampshire which began its life as a Roman town and was built in approximately 70AD and was known as Venta Belgarum. Once the Romans left the city fell into decline only to be revived by Alfred the Great in the 9th century where it prospered until London's prominence caused it once again to fall from favour. Indeed in 1724 Daniel Defoe described Winchester as “a place of no trade, no manufacture, no navigation" yet he noted that there was still an abundance of gentry. Fine houses therefore continued to be built and the18th century saw a large number of Georgian houses erected in Winchester and indeed many of these had internal shutters built into the window recess itself. Georgian shutters were designed in a number of different styles and used both internally and externally with the first examples of internal sliding shutters being used to cover windows. Winchester was revived by the arrival of the railway in 1840 and with this the town expanded rapidly and the familiar Victorian terraced housing stock that we see today was built. With feature bay windows and in general street facing the plantation shutter has also proven to be the ideal solution for dressing these windows. For examples of how the Winchester Shutter Range could dress your bay window visit our bay window shutter page.
